In 1913, three women became Japan’s first-ever female university students when they were admitted to Tohoku University under its open-door policy. This valuable legacy of higher education for women is kept alive by the Tohoku University Fund (Gender Equality Promotion), which aids TUMUG’s support for the skills development and career advancement of female researchers, the Science Angels team of women graduate students who promise to become tomorrow’s leaders in natural sciences research, and other activities for promoting gender equality.
