Tohoku University operates three on-campus childcare facilities available to use by university personnel with children not yet in primary school. These include two nurseries: Kawauchi Keyaki Hoikuen, which is open to all university personnel and students, and Hoshinoko Hoikuen, which is limited to Seiryo Campus personnel and students.

Kawauchi Hoikuen

Capacity: 30 children
Days: Monday – Saturday (excl. public and year-end/New Year’s holidays)
Hours

  • Regular care: Standard hours, 8 a.m.–7 p.m.; extended hours, 7–8 p.m. (excl. Saturdays)
  • Temporary care: 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Eligibility

  • Regular care
    Pre-school children of Tohoku University personnel/students who are at least two months old and require daycare. Children who can be cared for by someone in the family are ineligible.
  • Temporary care
    Pre-school children of Tohoku University personnel/students who are at least five months old can be placed in temporary care when the regular caregiver is unable to watch them due to hospitalization, emergencies, participation in conferences, and other situations requiring temporary care. Reservations are required and capacity is limited.

  • Regular care: Standard hours, 7:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.; extended hours, 6:30–8:30 p.m. (excl. Saturdays, Sundays & public holidays)
  • Overnight care: 6:30 p.m.–7:30 a.m. next day (offered only Monday & Thursday nights)
  • Temporary care: 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Eligibility

  • Regular care
    Pre-school children of Seiryo Campus personnel/students (TU Hospital, Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Dentistry, IDAC & ToMMo) who are at least two months old and require daycare. Children who can be cared for by someone in the family are ineligible.
  • Overnight care
    Pre-school children of Seiryo Campus personnel/students who are at least two months old and are enrolled in regular care can be placed in overnight care when the staff member/student is unable to watch them due to nighttime job duties or other situations requiring overnight care; children who are not enrolled may also be placed in overnight care in urgent situations. Reservations are required and capacity is limited.
  • Temporary care
    Pre-school children of Seiryo Campus personnel/students who are at least two months old and are cared for at home or another nursery can be placed in temporary care when required. Reservations are required and capacity is limited.
